Early Orthodontic Treatment for Kids
Early orthodontic care gives parents a clearer understanding of how their child’s smile is developing and whether any concerns are beginning to appear. An early evaluation at growth and alignment helps identify issues before they become more complex.
At What Age Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this stage, Dr. Anthony Harwell or Dr. Tanner Cook can evaluate how the jaw and teeth are developing and determine whether early orthodontic treatment may be beneficial. Many general dentists are trained to identify early orthodontic concerns as well, so you may be referred to our office even before age 7 if issues are detected.
Why Are Children Evaluated at Such an Early Age?
Evaluating children early allows us to identify developing orthodontic issues before they become more complex. Early diagnosis can:
- Guide erupting teeth into healthier positions
- Preserve necessary space for incoming permanent teeth
- Reduce the risk of chipping or damaging protruding front teeth
If early treatment is recommended, our doctors can help guide jaw growth, support proper tooth eruption, and correct harmful oral habits. This may include expanding the upper or lower dental arches, creating space for permanent teeth, decreasing the likelihood of extractions, preventing impacted teeth, stopping thumb sucking, and addressing abnormal swallowing or speech patterns. Early care often simplifies later treatment once all permanent teeth have erupted.
Will Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces for Kids Later On?
Early treatment can address major issues, prevent problems from worsening, and make future treatment simpler and shorter. However, because not all permanent teeth are present during early treatment, a second phase, often called Phase II, is usually needed during adolescence to complete alignment.
In some cases, early treatment alone may be sufficient, but this depends entirely on the child’s specific orthodontic needs.
Does Early Treatment Benefit Every Child?
Not all orthodontic concerns need early treatment. Some issues are best corrected in the teen years, when permanent teeth are in place and growth is further along. Certain skeletal problems also require waiting until jaw development has progressed.
Each child’s diagnosis is unique, and we will create a customized plan based on individual needs. If treatment is not needed right away, your child will be placed into our Orthodontic Supervisory Program so we can continue monitoring growth and development. Even if early treatment isn’t recommended, an evaluation around age 7 is still essential.
What Is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?
The Orthodontic Supervisory Program is designed for children who are not yet ready for treatment. This complimentary program allows us to track the development of permanent teeth and jaw growth.
During this period:
- Children are seen every 6–8 months
- We monitor the eruption of permanent teeth
- We may recommend early removal of baby teeth if it can improve eruption patterns
- We communicate all findings with your general dentist
By observing your child as they grow, we can determine the ideal time to begin treatment and set the foundation for the best possible long-term results.
What Benefits Does Orthodontic Treatment Provide Beyond a Beautiful Smile?
Orthodontic treatment does more than enhance appearance. Correcting misaligned teeth and bite issues can:
- Improve chewing function
- Make oral hygiene easier and more effective
- Reduce premature wear on teeth
- Promote better long-term dental health
These benefits support overall comfort, confidence, and lifelong dental stability.
Should Children Still See Their Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes. Regular dental visits remain essential. Braces and orthodontic appliances require extra care to keep teeth and gums healthy, so children should continue to see their family dentist every six months for routine cleanings and exams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Parents often have additional questions when learning about early orthodontic evaluations and treatment. These answers address common concerns families have before getting started.
What Signs Might Indicate My Child Needs an Early Orthodontic Evaluation?
Signs can include mouth breathing, difficulty chewing, early or late loss of baby teeth, crowded or spaced teeth, or jaws that don’t seem to align properly. Even if no obvious signs are present, an early screening helps confirm healthy development.
How Long Does Early Orthodontic Treatment Usually Last?
When early treatment is recommended, it typically lasts several months to about a year. The exact length depends on your child’s growth patterns and the goals of treatment.
Will Early Orthodontic Appliances Be Uncomfortable for My Child?
Most children adjust quickly to early orthodontic appliances. Any mild pressure or soreness usually fades within a few days as the mouth adapts.
How Often Will My Child Need Appointments During Monitoring or Treatment?
Children in active early treatment or monitoring are usually seen every 6 to 8 months, allowing us to track growth while keeping visits convenient for families.
Can Early Orthodontic Care Improve Long-Term Oral Health?
Yes. Addressing developing issues early can support healthier jaw growth, better bite function, and simpler orthodontic care later, helping protect your child’s smile long term.
