Dr. Harwell earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University, his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry, and completed both his Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and his Master of Science at the University of Texas–Houston.
